our GOOD EARTHI had a tour guide (a curator of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art) to show me around the museum and tell me about the different galleries that were available. Upon entering the space, she told me that the gallery was based off the earth whether it be how it was created, how it was corrupted, or the concerns that people may have for it. While strolling through the gallery, I stumbled upon some artwork by an artist named Roger Brown who was a part of the Chicago Imagist School in the 1960's. I immediately noticed his work and was extremely intrigued by the pop art and bits of surrealism along with other movements that were incorporated in his pieces. I was also drawn to his style of painting because it resembled by own in few ways; the harsh lines, smooth blending, and surrealist style were things that I used often in my own works. The only difference however was that he used oil which works very well to blend, whereas I used acrylic.
The first piece that I noticed upon walking into this gallery was Mountain Sites by Roger Brown for his use of bold lines as well as bold colors. I was immediately intrigued by the pop art aspect of his works. The painting titled Sudden Avalanche (also by Roger Brown) also caught my eye immediately, not only because of its massive size but also for its pop art-like qualities. I noticed through this one as well as the painting below that he also includes more of a surrealist quality at times. The mix of these two movements makes for great pieces of art.
The piece below caught my eye due to the pop art aspect as well as surrealist-like quality which is similar to Roger Brown's aesthetic, but very different in the actual details of the piece. I immediately became memorized by the use of hue as well as line.
Below is a piece titled, Animals Running Through Fire by Nicholas Monro.

Claire sTIGLIANIUpon entering the State Street Gallery that was showing the artwork of Claire Stigliani, I was a bit afraid at first. It contained dolls in boxes as well as sex related material as well as biblical content. Confused and overwhelmed, I began to saunter through the gallery. I discovered tiny theater sets, paintings, and videos created from the theater sets. I began to make connections about the way that the paintings were created from scenes set within the theater sets, and the videos were created from the marionettes/dolls that the artist created. I had a tour guide with me who knew Claire and shared with me that through the scenes, Claire was secretly portraying events, evoking emotions, and telling stories about herself. These stories and events could have been actual or desired by Claire which is intriguing.
